Information for Prospective Candidates
Thank you for expressing an interest in joining the Spirit Mountain Ski Patrol. We are a first responder organization serving the Spirit Mountain Recreation Area during the ski season from approximately mid November until March 31st. As a member of the National Ski Patrol System, we, along with 26,000 members, respond to the needs of the skiing/riding public. The ski patrol isn't an autonomous group, but rather a function of area management.
The first year is your candidate year and the time commitment can be very demanding. Candidates are required to take the 66 hour (OEC) Outdoor Emergency Care course which begins in late September and meets basically every Monday and Thursday evening until the end of November. Approximately 80-100 hours should be devoted to class time and outside reading. Upon completion of the OEC course hill training begins. Candidates are required to attend an on-the-hill orientation session where skiing and toboggan handling skills are introduced. Several Monday evening training sessions are required and hill trainers are available on most every patrol shift to assist you with your skills and skill check-off card. A ski-along in March with the Hill Trainer Instructor of Record and Patrol Director formalizes your hill training and you advance to basic patroller status.
Costs for the candidate year are approximately $210.00, which includes patrol dues, required textbooks and the OEC course registration fee. Dues subsequent years are $77.00. As a candidate you receive a season pass. Beginning with your second year you are offered discounted season passes for family members. Additionally, you will be invited to Pro Night sponsored by area ski shops where select new equipment is discounted to ski professionals.
Normal shift options are available to candidates. Currently we have openings for weekend and weekday shifts. Weekend patrollers patrol every third weekend for one half of the day and a random weeknight every three weeks or so.....
Thank you again for your interest.
